Custom Glazed Cabinet Refinishing Project

GSG Custom Coatings refinished these Warwick, NY kitchen cabinets with a custom hand applied patina glaze, also known as a pinstripe glaze. This project post is presented by GSG Custom Coatings and documents the steps taken to meet the homeowner's request for a color match and a refined, furniture-grade cabinet finish.

The homeowner specifically asked that the new finish match the existing cabinet color. We used our professional color matching process to reproduce the requested tone before any finishing began. That ensured the final glaze and topcoats would coordinate with the rest of the kitchen.

Before glazing, the cabinets went through an extensive refinishing process. Each piece was thoroughly cleaned and degreased to remove oils and contaminants. We sanded surfaces as needed, and filled dents and scratches so the doors and drawer fronts presented a smooth, even base for primer and paint.

After prep work, we primed and painted the cabinets with multiple coats of a 2K(catalyst added) water-based urethane from Centurion Industrial Wood Coatings in a Satin finish. All coats were sprayed using professional grade finishing equipment to achieve a furniture/cabinet grade finish. Our spraying process produces an even, consistent surface that allows the glaze to lay properly in profiles and recessed details.

Once the base coats were complete, we applied a van-dyke brown glaze from General Finishes to accent the profiles and recesses of the doors, drawer fronts and crown moldings. The glaze was hand applied to control how much color collected in each crevice, creating the subtle contrast and depth that defines a patina or pinstripe glaze finish. Hand application lets us emphasize trim lines and ornate details without covering flat surfaces.

The result is a custom finish that provides a unique and timeless look, one that is both beautiful and versatile across a range of home design styles. Because the project combined careful surface preparation, a professional color match, high-quality 2K water-based urethane topcoats and a controlled hand-applied glaze, the cabinets have the appearance of custom furniture with the durability expected in a kitchen.

Homeowners in Warwick, NY who are considering cabinet refinishing can expect the same sequence of steps: prep, color match, sprayed base coats, and a hand-applied glaze to accent details. That approach preserves existing cabinet structure while delivering a refreshed, cohesive look that fits the client’s design goals.

Client Review

Owner operated and so professionally done. From start to finish all the work is completed by one person. This person is the owner of the company and takes pride in what he does. He is neat, organized, focused, uses great time management, and does exactly what he tells you he will do. We had our entire kitchen refinished and the final result was amazingly gorgeous. Our kitchen looks updated new fresh and beautifully painted. I recommend this business in every way shape and form. Took 2 weeks from start to finish.
